After checking out from your hotel in Shirahama in the morning, travel by private vehicle to Hosshinmon-oji on the Nakahechi Route of the Kumano Kodo. Your large luggage can remain in the vehicle, allowing you to hike with only the essentials you need for the day.
Today’s route covers approximately 7 km from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha. Rather than returning to the starting point after the hike, you will follow the historic pilgrimage route all the way to Kumano Hongu Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of Kumano. Leave Shirahama by private vehicle and travel deeper into the mountainous interior of the Kii Peninsula toward Hosshinmon-oji on the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Route.
As you leave the seaside resort area and enter the mountains of Kumano, the scenery gradually changes from the coastal landscapes of the previous days to the forested interior of the Kii Peninsula.

Today’s route has been selected to avoid more demanding long-distance sections and major elevation changes. The aim is not speed or physical challenge, but rather to experience the Kumano Kodo at a comfortable pace.
Although approximately 7 km, this is still a proper hiking route. The trail includes natural paths, uphill and downhill sections, and uneven surfaces. Basic walking fitness is required, and we recommend adjusting your pace according to your physical condition and taking breaks when necessary.

Walk along the Kumano Kodo until you reach Kumano Hongu Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of Kumano.

【About the Approx. 7 km Hiking Route】
Today’s hike follows the approximately 7 km section of the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Route from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha.
The itinerary is not designed as a strenuous long-distance trek with major elevation changes. Instead, it allows general travelers to experience the forests, natural scenery, historic sites, and traditional pilgrimage route to Kumano Hongu within a more manageable distance.
However, avoiding the most difficult sections does not mean the entire route is flat or effortless.
The trail still includes natural mountain paths, uphill and downhill sections, uneven surfaces, and areas that may become slippery depending on weather conditions. Participants should have basic walking fitness.
We recommend wearing non-slip athletic shoes or hiking shoes suitable for mountain trails and bringing drinking water, rain gear, sun protection, and appropriate outdoor clothing according to the season and weather.
In the event of severe weather, trail closures, or other conditions that may affect safety, the hiking section may be adjusted or cancelled with traveler safety as the highest priority.
【Convenience of a Private Vehicle】
As you will check out from your Shirahama hotel in the morning, your large luggage can remain in the private vehicle throughout the day.
After dropping you off at Hosshinmon-oji, the driver will travel separately to the Kumano Hongu area. You only need to carry the essentials required for the hike and follow the Kumano Kodo to Kumano Hongu Taisha.
After completing the hike and visiting the shrine, simply meet your driver again, retrieve your luggage, and continue directly to your accommodation at Watarase Onsen. There is no need to return to the starting point or carry large luggage on mountain-area public transportation.

This is not a casual walk on flat ground, and participants should have basic walking fitness.
• Please wear non-slip athletic shoes or hiking shoes suitable for mountain trails. High heels, sandals, slippers, and other footwear unsuitable for hiking are not recommended. As vehicles cannot directly access some sections of the Kumano Kodo, immediate pick-up at your current location cannot be guaranteed.
