Leave Shirahama by private vehicle and travel deeper into the mountainous interior of the Kii Peninsula toward Hosshinmon-oji on the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Route.
As you leave the seaside resort area and enter the mountains of Kumano, the scenery gradually changes from the coastal landscapes of the previous days to the forested interior of the Kii Peninsula.

Today’s hike follows the approximately 7 km section of the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Route from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha.
The itinerary is not designed as a strenuous long-distance trek with major elevation changes. Instead, it allows general travelers to experience the forests, natural scenery, historic sites, and traditional pilgrimage route to Kumano Hongu within a more manageable distance.
However, avoiding the most difficult sections does not mean the entire route is flat or effortless.
The trail still includes natural mountain paths, uphill and downhill sections, uneven surfaces, and areas that may become slippery depending on weather conditions. Participants should have basic walking fitness.
We recommend wearing non-slip athletic shoes or hiking shoes suitable for mountain trails and bringing drinking water, rain gear, sun protection, and appropriate outdoor clothing according to the season and weather.
In the event of severe weather, trail closures, or other conditions that may affect safety, the hiking section may be adjusted or cancelled with traveler safety as the highest priority.
